Osmotic

Behavior of RBC
Activity No. 2
What is osmosis?
1. Osmotic Pressure
- pressure generated as water diffuse across a membrane.

2. Osmolarity
- is used to describe the number of solute particles in a volume of fluid.
Hypertonic Solution or Hypertonicicty
When the osmotic pressure of the solution outside the blood cells in higher
than the osmotic pressure inside the red blood cells, the solution is hypertonic.

Hypotonic Solution or Hypotonicity
When the solution outside of the red blood cells has a lower osmotic
pressure than the cytoplasm of the red blood cells, the solution is hypotonic with
respect to the cells.

Isotonic Solution or Isotonicity
When the osmotic pressure outside the red blood cells is the same as the
pressure inside the cells, the solution is isotonic with respect to the cytoplasm.

Ano daw?!!

Oh no!?!!!

van't Hoff Equation: = MRT
= osmotic pressure
M = molarity = moles
volume(L)
R = ideal gas constant
T = temperature (K)

1. Osmotic Pressure Calculation for a Nonelectrolyte Solution
Calculate the osmotic pressure exhibited by a 0.10M sucrose solution at 20
o
C.

2. Osmotic Pressure Calculation for an Electrolyte Solution
Calculate the osmotic pressure exhibited by a 0.42M KOH solution at 30
o
C.

3.Calculation of Molecular Mass (Formula Weight) Using Osmotic Pressure
0.500g hemoglobin was dissolved in enough water to make 100.0mL of solution.
At 25
o
C the osmotic pressure was found to be 1.78 x 10
-3
atm.
Calculate the molecular mass (formula weight) of the hemoglobin.
