10 COMMON MISTAKES

Think of mistakes as opportunities to learn.

Many of the mistakes you will make will be
unavoidable. However, there are some
mistakes, common to beginning teachers, that
are avoidable.

Keep these in mind as you begin your new
career.
Mistake #1: You want your
students to like you.
Mistake #2: You avoid asking for
help.
Mistake #3: You are constantly
bringing college work home so
that you have no leisure time at
all.
Mistake #4: You act in a less-than-
professional manner in an attempt
to relate to your students.
Mistake #5: You become involved
in College "politics.
Mistake #6: You overextend
yourself by volunteering too often
Mistake #7: Your students are not
living up to your expectations and
therefore you think you are a
failure.
Mistake #8: You take home all the
problems of the day.
Mistake #9: You ignore small
behavior problems in hopes they
will go away.
Mistake #10: You do not have a
clear set of rules or guidelines.

In teaching
Mistake #1. Disrespect students.
Mistake #2. Teach without clear
learning objectives.
Mistake #3. Get stuck in a rut.
Mistake #4. Give tests that are too
many or too long
Mistake #5. Fail to establish
relevance.
Mistake #6. Have students work in
groups with no individual
accountability.
Mistake #7. Fail to provide variety
in instruction.
Mistake #8. Turn classes into
PowerPoint shows
Mistake #9. Call on students cold.
Mistake #10. When you ask a
question in class, immediately call
for volunteers.
