Activity 3.42
Dart Board

Introduction: Game designers use probability to help them determine layouts of games,
like darts. Lets look at some of the probability of hitting a section of a dart board.
Materials:
Internet
2D drawing package
Printer
Calculator
Background information:
The formula for a circle is Circle
Area =2 A= d
Dartboard dimensions:
Diameter of playing circle: 13 inches
Width if inner and outer rings: inch
Diameter including the inner ring: 6 inches
Diameter of outer (double) bulls eye: 1 inches
Diameter of inner (triple) bulls eye: inch

GAD Activity 3.42
Procedure:
PART I: MATH
A. Answer the following questions concerning the geometry of a dart board
1. Area of the entire playing circle:(A=2, A=d,
Diameter of circle:13 in) = 137.886 in
2

2. Area of the outer bulls eye:(Diameter outer bulls eye =
1.25 in, A=2 , A= d) 1.18 in
2

3. Area of the inner bulls eye: (Diameter inner bulls eye:
inch, A=2 , A= d) 0.05 in
2

B. Take these answers for the next part:
4. Area of the inside of the outer ring: 5.154 in
2

5. Area of the inside of the inner ring: 2.36 in
2

6. Area of the entire playing area except for the bulls eye: 136.66 in
2

7. Area of each numbered (1-20) section, including both rings: 6.894 in
2

8. Area of the outer ring in any numbered section: .2577 in
2

9. Area of the inner ring in any numbered section: .118 in
2

C. Answer the following concerning the probability of a dartboard

1. Probability of hitting any numbered section, including the
inner and outer rings? 1/20
2. Probability of hitting any part of the outer bulls eye?
.85%
3. Probability of hitting any part of the inner bulls eye?
.036%
4. Probability of hitting the outer ring of any numbered section? 0.187%
5. Probability of hitting the inner ring of any numbered section? 0.0856%

PART II: Dartboard Design Project
1. Using Corel Draw, Adobe Illustrator, paint, or pencil and the Design Journal, design
an original dart board. The dart board can be any shape with the same number of
sections as the regulation dartboard.
2. Provide all dimensions for your board.
GAD Activity 3.42
3. You may want to consider using rulers and guidelines to aid in your drawing.
4. Calculate the probability of hitting the bulls eye section of your board.
5. Print out your dartboard and place in on the floor. Dropping pencils from waist high,
play a short game with your board. You may need to think of some different rules.
6. Here are a few examples.
Playing area- 39.546 in
2

Inside=3.9 in
Diameter=7.8 in
Outer rim- 2.923 in
2
Side= .91 in
Diameter= 1.82 in
Side= .05in
Diameter=.1 in
Rectangle= .89 in by 2.59 in
Probability of hitting the outer bullseye: 7.39%
Probability of hitting the inner bullseye: 0.0607%

Questions:
1. How did your empirical (pencil drops on the paper dartboard) and theoretical
probability (question 4 above) differ? Propose a hypothesis why the values might
have been different.
I statistically had a .0607% change of hitting the inner bullseye but
empirically hit it 100% of the one time I did it. This is because there are
many factors that affect the outcome of a game, including a players luck and
skill.
2. At some point in games, do you think skill may play a part in the outcome?
Yes, natural abilities may be factors that affect the outcome.
3. Do you think Darts is a game of skill or probability? Explain your answers.
Its a game of skill, based on a players ability to correct estimate and throw
the dart.
