Targets for the Week of Sept. 1 st , 2014 Reading: Skill Review: Students will be reviewing the following strategies and skills before starting Unit 1: text structure, figurative language, authors viewpoint, and authors purpose. All 5 th graders will be having their first library checkout and are expected to check out at least 1 book at their Lexile level. Additionally, students will learn how to set an attainable reading goal. Writing: Super Hero Paragraphs: Students will continue to work through the writing process by drafting, participating in peer conferences, editing and revising their super hero paragraphs. Math: Unit 1 is not a tested unit- therefore, no pre-test was given for this unit. Students will practice identifying factors of given numbers by using arrays and divisibility rules. Students will also identify and work with square numbers. Science: Students will read to identify elements and properties of matter. o In 5 th grade Science and Social Science units are taught as part of a rotation instead of simultaneously. After this science unit on matter, students will then be taught a Social Science unit. Science homework will often consist of reading and note-taking so each student can be prepared to discuss the material together in class.

This week, all of the 5 th graders participated in 3 different experiments, which helped them identify and practice the steps of the Scientific Method. Ask your child about their favorite experiment and be sure to have them show you the motions! Have your child tell you their favorite things about the PBIS assembly today. If your child has not brought in all of their supplies, please try to use this long weekend to gather those and send them with your child to school on Tuesday.
