Year of Science!

The GLCS Foundations Year of Science and Science & Engineering

Festival are quickly approaching! The goal of the Year of Science is to
ignite students interest and engagement in the Science, Technology,
Engineering and Math (STEM) disciplines by providing more exposure
to these fields in a fun and interesting way. We need your support!

MS Greenhouse Gets Renovated!

Thanks to a collaboraton among the GLCS
Foundaton, GLCS, W.K. Kellogg Biological
Staton, Gull Lake United Way, and the
Vanderstreek Family (Bovens Greenhouse),
renovatons and improvements to the Middle
School Greenhousewhich was slated for
demolitonare underway!

The greenhouse has been an aspiraton of the
MS Science Department since we moved into
this building in 2007, said Jen Boyle, Middle
School Science Department Chair. Thanks to
discussions initated by the Year of Science and
the resultng collaboraton, we were able to not
only bring the greenhouse back, but make
improvements to the layout and functonality
which will allow us to expand student
engagement in experiental science educaton.

Having fallen into disrepair years before, the
greenhouse had not been utlized as intended for
some tme and
plans were being
made to tear it
down. However,
meetngs for the
Year of Science
turned into talks of
how to salvage the
space and bring it
up to todays
science standards .

The newly renovated space will feature more
efcient and safe Lexan (a stronger, more
fexible material than single-pane glass), a shade
system, new lightng, revamped ventlaton, a
sink, and increased seatng capacity.

We are currently collaboratng among
departments on innovatve, cross-curricular
ways to meet math, nutriton, and science
standards by combining the science of growing
and consuming healthy food with the business
of using the produce of the greenhouse to
create a youth economic enterprise, explained
Boyle. We believe this new learning
environment will inspire students to be curious
observers and actve inquirers, and also provide
an opportunity for them to develop increased
responsibility, confdence and pride in their
accomplishments.
