Fifth grade social studies initiates students in a more disciplinary-centered approach to the topic while building on the information covered in their previous years of social studies instruction. Our focus throughout fifth grade is on the early history of the United States, beginning with Native Americans and working our way up through the Bill of Rights in 1791. Particular areas of study will include pre-Columbian times, colonization and settlement, and revolution and the new nation. In examining each of these historical periods, students will be asked to call upon and utilize information learned in previous years as we take time to examine the geographic, civic and economic perspectives involved during each time period. Delving into a more disciplinary-centered approach with the somewhat personal history of the early United States throughout fifth grade will better prepare the students to continue this approach as the go on to study western and eastern hemispheres and modern US history in higher grade levels. Additionally, students will spend some time throughout the year on a more focused study of geography and at the end of the year they will participate in their first year of the Junior Achievement program.
Grading Student grades will be based on homework, daily work, current events, geography binders, tests, projects, and participation. All grades are on a standard point system.
