Title: Matisse Madness Unit: Paper manipulation

Suggested Time: One class period

Instructional Objectives (2-3):
Students will (Kansas Standard): Manipulate subjects to reflect art of other culture, time
and place

Students will (Missouri Standard): Create non-objective original artwork using line,
shape and color.

Students will learn about the work of Matisse, learn how to over lap shapes, and learn
how to sandwich collage shapes.



Elements of Art (1-3) line, color, shape


Principles of Design (1-3) repetition, movement, unity


Materials and Equipment:
12x18 Construction paper, construction paper scraps, tissue paper scraps, mod-podge,
medium bristled brushes, glue cups, drying rack, scissors.



Vocabulary (4-5):
Triptych, Overlap, Collage, Fauvism, Organic vs. Geometric


Art Production (based on Madeline Hunter model)

1. What is the craziest, brightest clothing you have worn to school?
2. Welcome, today you will learn about Matisse and make a collage.
3. Short power point of Matisse include youtube videos about work.
4. Demo folding paper into triptych.
5. Check for understanding
6. Demo cutting shapes / sandwich collaging
7. Go! Do it! students create triptych, check for understanding
8. 5 minute warning, clean up, transition of what happens next, ask questions on vocab.
