OVERVIEW
We have already learned that an
understanding of the rules of capitalization
is necessary as the call attention to special
words, give more significance to others,
and indicate the beginning of sentences.
In this second part of the notes, we will
review additional capitalization rules.

THE RULES: GEOGRAPHIC LOCATIONS
In a geographical name, capitalize the first
letter of each word except for articles and
prepositions. These include:

SECTIONS
Capitalize names of sections of the country.
You do NOT capitalize these when they are
simple directions on a compass.
Example: The West has several old trading
posts.
Example: The South is sometimes called

Example: Barrow, Alaska is north of all other US
cities.
Example: Drive east on Interstate 80 to get to
NYC.

Capitalize the first word of a
