Introduction
This lesson was created to teach students how to add and subtract decimals using a
calculator, computer, or a smartphone.

Task
This lesson is anchored in fifth grade math to teach addition and subtraction of
decimals. The students will need to know how to use a standalone calculator or a
calculator on a computer or smartphone. The students will also need to use basic
addition and subtraction skills.

Curriculum Standards

Math Standards Addressed:
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths.
Using a calculator, computer, or smartphone to compute problems.
Students will compare and contrast their methods of solving the problems.

Process
Students will learn the rules for adding and subtracting decimals. They will also
learn all math terms associated with the lesson. After solving the problems
individually, the students will be divided into groups of 2 and will compare their
work. As a class, discuss the differences(if any) of how everyone came to solve
each problem.

Resources Needed
Worksheet
Calculator, computer, or smartphone (one for each student)
pencil
thinking cap (one for each student)

Assessment
After group work and discussion, determine if anyone needs extra help or if
everyone grasped the lesson.

Conclusion
Students will learn that adding and subtracting decimals is a task they will use
daily. The following are ways that decimals are used: pumping gas, measuring
height and weight, taking temperature, counting money, etc.
