FUN EXERCISES: HW#0

1.

STEP1: The switch S is initially open. When the switch S is closed, there might be
transient current recorded by the ammeter.
This transient current will be flowing
a. LEFT TO RIGHT
b. RIGHT TO LEFT
c. NO FLOW
Explain your reasoning
STEP2. TAKE =10V and R=10 Ohms
a. Calculate V
P
and V
Q
, the voltages at P and Q before the switch is closed.

b. Calculate V
P
and V
Q
, the voltages at P and Q after the switch is closed.

2A.

2B. Two non-identical bulbs of resistances R1 and R2 are connected to a battery
( R1>R2)
i) If they are connected in series, which will be brighter
ii) if they are connected in parallel, which one is brighter
(Assume that brightness is proportional to the power dissipated)

a. Assume that the battery is an ideal one. What is the voltage across the 1 ohm
resistor?

b. If the battery has an internal resistance, how would you proceed to solve the
problem? Why is this not as easy as part a)?
To understand what goes on, take the internal resistance to be 1 ohm and the
equivalent resistance of the entire mess on the left to be 9 ohm. This will help you
with how you will proceed but after that I would like you to give the answer in
words rather than use the numbers.

10. Can you easily calculate the resistance of these circuits?

11. Finally,

Well, they are. Hope you can see that they are identical.
