Emma Big Bear Dedication coming Saturday

Emma Big Bear, the fifth statue in the Mississippi River Sculpture Park, arrived on Tuesday,
July 12. Tom Nelson and the six-man community work crew from the Prairie du Chien
Correctional Institution unloaded her and installed her on her concrete pad.
Florence Bird, creator of the statue, took this photo shortly after the installation was
completed and the sculpture was covered. By Saturday, July 16, a formal, embroidered cover
will disguise the statue until the official unveiling begins.
The ceremony begins at 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 16, in the Sculpture Park on St. Feriole
Island.

Battle Point to add music to Dedication ceremony

Battle Point, a Ho-Chunk drum circle, will travel
from Black River Falls to honor the Ho-Chunk
artisan Emma Big Bear at the dedication of her
statue on July 16.
The drum, big enough to accommodate five
musicians, was built by Lance Blackdeer, the
group's lead singer. Blackdeer has sung at a
number of gatherings, including one of the
Inaugural Balls honoring President Barak Obama.
