INTRODUCTION OF TOBACCO WORLD

Growth of tobacco takes place in world at extensive sector it is grown in 125 countries and over
4 million hectare of land and china is third in it. If we estimate total revenue or worth of the
tobacco revenues collected is approximately US$ 120 billion. In 1960 the total bulk was shifted
from America to Asia and Africa.

In America land which was under tobacco cultivation has been halved and also in Canada and
Mexico but has doubled in china, Malawi and Asia. Total consumption of tobacco and cigarettes
has been rising rapidly but in some countries it is decreasing. The main reason of increasing
smokers is that population is increasing rapidly and if it increased like this there will be 2 billion
more people in this world Tobacco consumption is growing like an epidemic disease. As the
production is taking place it states that there is 1000 cigarettes for each man, woman and
cigarettes on the planet. Cigarettes generates 96% of sales out of total value sales, and Asia is
one of the biggest consumer of tobacco and along with them Australia and far east are walking
side by side and data is (2715 billion), Followed by U.S (745 billion), Eastern Europe and
Former soviet union(631 billion) The total will be showing some developmental sign because by
2020 it is expected to rise to 1.6 billion. Current scenario states that tobacco causes death of
about 3.5 to 4 million people every year which is estimated to increase to 10 million by 2020 and
not only this is restricted to rural areas but also an issue of concern for the developed countries
because it may rise to 7 million in these areas mainly due to increasing trend of tobacco. In India
tobacco consumption is on toll or major health hazard here. Association of smokeless tobacco
use with oral cancer was pointed out in 1908.tobacco comes in two forms smoking and
smokeless form but both are the major player in causing harmful disease to human body. Smoke
tobacco causes disease like cancer where as smokeless cause cancer of oral cavity, pharynx,
Larynx and Esophagus.

Major players in tobacco field especially in cigarettes markets are:-

1. ITC (Indian tobacco Company)

5. Dalmia Consumer Care

6. Kothari product Ltd.

taxes it is able to maintain its number 1 position due to which other players are also making new
strategies to sustain their market share.

TOBACCO USE IN INDIA

The world’s largest tobacco control event that is 14th world conference on tobacco and health
was held on March 8th to 12th in Mumbai. This conference divided the world into 4 stages on the
basis of tobacco consumption and these stages were:-

Stage 1:- In this stage smoking is not widely prevalent (example sub Saharan Africa)
Stage 2:- Well in this stage smoking becomes more common and men do smoke at higher level
that is 50% to 80% men smoke and 10-15% women. (Example China, Japan, South- East Asia &
North Africa)

Stage 3:- Awareness about the ill effect prevails in a country and percentage of men smokers
comes down to 40% where as women percentage rises to 35%-40% which is the peak after this it
also declines. This generally prevails in the higher educated groups or population.(example Latin
America, Central & Eastern Europe)

Stage 4:- In this stage smoking generally declines. The percentage of smokers both male and
female goes down due to awareness among them regarding hazardous consequences of tobacco
consumption.

INDIA is in second stage where low income socio economic groups are more prone to smoking
whereas in country like china high income groups lit their cigarettes to show their status and
style or in other words a sign of status symbol. Here is the data of total percentage of various
tobacco consumers in India:-
Page |7

We are not as other countries which are in stage two as there are increasing number of women
smokers is much at toll if we compare it with India but think about that time when it will be
increasing at great speed and it will because in lo class areas it is because if lack of education and
illiteracy and in upper class it is becoming a status symbol and they think smoking is Cooooool.

According to Data provided in Times of India there are 229 million male smokers which is
second after china 331 million and among female it’s less as compared to male 5 million which
smokes Bidis and Cigarettes. India is the third largest producer of tobacco after Brazil and China.

Substitute to tobacco products

As it has already been discussed above there are 2 substitutes of the tobacco products

2. Chabazza.

These two products were introduced in Indian market in 2003 with a vision to make India free of
tobacco. These two products are made for those who are really prone to smoking habits means
who are really addicted to taking tobacco in any form either eating or smoking.

Vardan is the name of a bidi which is made up of herbal leaves which is grown in India. The
main profit of this vardan bidi is that it does not have tobacco content in it. Means to say that it
does not have nicotine, magnesium, or any other properties which can harm human body.

Vardan bidi is generally made for urban but it will cater rurally needs of the person. Dalmia
consumer care came out with this idea because most of the people or large part of India is
involved in bidi smoking thus they targeted major population of India.
P a g e | 17

This bidi have same feeling o a normal bidi but it will not harm human body or even his lungs
and don’t have any side effect.

Another invention which came into market in 2003 was chabazza an alternative for chewing
tobacco. Chabazza was made for those who generally consumes tobacco in eatable form, and
due to this habits of those they generally suffers from cuts and ulcers in their mouth and severe
effect is that they suffers from mouth cancer and other several diseases of mouth and throat.

Chabazza is generally a mouth freshener in the form of gum lets which give the same feel of
chewing tobacco but is not harmful to human in any aspect.

These two products are really substitute of tobacco as they are fulfilling the requirement of
smoking and alsoe giving the same fee of smoke and other is giving the feeling of eatable
tobacco but not giving any harm to human being.

Now the only thing is to make people aware about this product as these are such kinds of
