"A family supper" is a story written by Kazuo Ishiguro.

It takes place in Tokyo after

World War II, where the narrator, Ishiguro, was born. eading the story we can notice a lot of
emotions, concerned with ner!ousness, uncertainty and loss of lo!e in the family of the main
characters. When Ishiguro returnes home from "alifornia, his father informes him of the death of
his mother. #e also in$uires about the death of his father%s firm, and business partner, who
committed suicide after murdering his family. These e!ents changed a personality of his father
who feels lonely and depri!ed of hope and thinks about suicide as a relief from loneliness and
guilt.
While walking through his old house, Ishiguro claims that he forgot how big is the house
but he remembers that rooms were empty and still they are. It can illustrate his father, who is the
owner and li!es there alone. #e separates himself from the rest of the world and children. #e
thinks of his future with nobody at home and wants someone who take care of him. #e would like
Ishiguro to stay in the house.
The story is written in first person prospecti!e, thanks to which we can understand the
thoughts of the narrator and his father. #owe!er, we can portray the character of Ishiguro only
through the con!ersations and actions because his thoughts are ne!er gi!en for himself. &or
e'ample we can see him as irresponsible son, who doesn%t care about his family and doesn%t feel
the need of lo!e. The family ha!e become alienated and the relationship is broken, but narrator
doesn%t see anything wrong in it. #e thinks that e!erything is allright.
In the story we can notice the emotional and formal tone. The father is always uncertain
and ner!ous, and the son is sloppy and doesn%t care about his father%s emotions. The father wants
Ishiguro to stay and takes him through the house. #e seems as empty as the rooms they pass. #e
feels isolated and claims that life with no ambitions will be ruined.
Kazuo Ishiguro shows us how much important is the need of lo!e and compassion for our
elders. Isolation from the rest of the world is not a good thing and can broke our relationship. We
should concentrate on our elders and show that we lo!e them. We shouldn%t lea!e them alone
because they are the most important part of our life. What will we do when they are missing( We
could only regret that we didn%t pay enough attention on them.
