BIOSTAT FINAL EXAM

Instruction for Nursing:

Determine whether there is a significant difference in the mean age of ICU patients who
survived and those who died. State your null and alternative hypotheses for this research
problem. Perform the appropriate statistical test using Stata and interpret the results (state
whether you will reject or fail to reject Ho, and state your conclusion).

Hypothesis:

Ho: There is no significant difference in the mean age of the patients in ICU who died and who
survived.
H1: There is a significant difference in the age of the patients in ICU who died and who
survived.

Interpretation:
To find out if the given probability is normally distributed, we use the Skewness/Kurtosis test
for normality. It yields the result of 0.0230, which is less than alpha = 0.05, thus the probability
is not normally distributed.

Skewness/Kurtosis tests for Normality

Variable Obs Pr(Skewness) Pr(Kurtosis) adj chi2(2) Prob>chi
AGE 100 0.0043 0.6684 7.55 0.0230

For this observation, we are going to use the Mann Whitney Test for the following reasons:

1. All the observations from both groups are independent of each other; and
2. The observation is not normally distributed thus it requires a Non-Parametric Test.

Two-sample Wilcoxon rank-sum (Mann-Whitney) test

OUTCOME obs rank sum expected

LIVED 80 3693.5 4040
DIED 20 1356.5 1010

combined 100 5050 5050

unadjusted variance 13466.67
adjustment for ties -13.09
adjusted variance 13453.58

Ho: AGE(OUTCOME==LIVED) = AGE(OUTCOME==DIED)
z = -2.987

Prob > |z| = 0.0028

The result of the Mann Whitney Test yields a p-value of 0.0028, which is less than alpha = 0.05.
Therefore the interpretation is Reject the Null Hypothesis.

Conclusion: There is a significant difference in the age of the patients in ICU who died and
who survived.
