Question 1
Comments
The rating on this response: Average
No marks were awarded for answers for Part (a) as all were incorrect. For the first property,
the candidate did not state a specific and relevant property and the second property given was
incorrect. The example of the importance to the property of solubility to life simply
described what solubility means and not the importance. For Part (b) (i). the graph was quite
well done but was missing a scale. The response for Part (b) (ii) was incomplete and vague
in its explanation, and it showed no clear understanding of water potential. for example.
becoming more negative during daylight hours less negative during the night (cooler period
of the day). Part (c) was well (lone and candidate gained full marks for all parts of the
question. Handwriting was neat and tidy.
SECTION A
Answer ALL questions.
Write your answers in the spaces provided in this booklet.
(a) Water is a molecule that is important to life due to the variety of its properties. Table 1 is
an incomplete table showing the link between some properties of water and examples of its
importance to life,
Complete Table I by writing the missing information in the spaces provided.

(b) Table 2 summarizes data on changes in water potential over an i8hour period, beginning at
0400 hours, in the leaves of a shrub that grows in dry conditions. Note that 0400 hours is the
same as 4:00 a.m.
