Experiment: Can water and chocolate exist in different states?
Prediction 1: What effect will heating have on
a solid chocolate block?
The chocolate will melt and change
state from solid to liquid.

Prediction 2: What effect will heating have on
solid ice cubes?
The ice will melt and change state from
solid to liquid

Observations:
The chocolate melted from a solid state
to a liquid state.

Observations:
The ice melted from a solid state to a
liquid state.

Explanation:
Heat causes chocolate to change from a
solid to a liquid.
Explanation:
Heat causes ice to melt and change
state from solid to liquid.

Prediction 3: What effect will heating have on liquid water?
The water will boil and change state from liquid to gas, or steam. The water depth
will decrease as steam (water in a gas state) escapes into the air.

Observations:
The water boiled. I observed steam rising from the saucepan into the air. The
water depth decreased by 2cm after 10 minutes of boiling.

Explanations:
When water boils, it changes state from liquid to gas. Steam is water as a gas, or
vapour. Heating makes water boil.
