1. Self-confidence is a key entrepreneurial attribute. You have to be confident your product is
something the world needs and that you can deliver it to be better than your competition. "You
have to have a lot of self-confidence. Be willing to take a risk, but be conservative," says Jason
Apfel, founder of FragranceNet.com, an e-commerce site for beauty products. Apfel didn't know
anything about the beauty world when he started the company, but he was confident that he could
create a good website to sell such products. "I thought that selling a product online at the most
competitive price would work," he says. His company has beat well-funded competitors and
receives $145 million in yearly sales.

2. For domestic travel, consider national parks toward the end of August, Ms. Frommer says.
"Many schools now start in August, so a lot of very popular family destinations like national parks
and the communities that surround them become empty in the last two weeks in August," and hotel
and other prices drop as a result, she says. However, if your dates are firmly in June or July,
consider destinations less traveled during the U.S. summer. Going to Mexico, the Caribbean or
other popular winter destinations can bring your travel costs down, particularly on hotel stays, says
Cindy Nelson, a manager at Carlson Wagonlit Travel in Minneapolis. "Hoteliers will discount their
rates in the summer to attract visitors there," she says. For European travel, go in May, September
or October. Same goes for Alaska. "It's a really popular summer destination," Ms. Nelson says.
Alaskan cruises in September "generally will be better priced than the midsummer dates."

3. On our planet, and probably on other planets where life exists, life and water have been
companions since life first began. There are single-celled organisms that live their whole lives in
just enough water to be on one grain of sand. Some species of algae are found only on the melting
surfaces of pieces of ice. Certain species of bacteria and certain blue-green algae can tolerate the
boiling-hot water of hot springs. In the desert, plants race through an entire life cycle, from seed to
flower to seed again, after just one rainfall. In the jungle, the water cupped in the leaves of a
tropical plant forms a microcosm in which a variety of small organisms are born, grow, and die. We
are interested in whether the soil of Mars and the thick atmosphere surrounding Venus contain
water because we want to know whether life is there.
