Assignment 4
Due on 9

Sept. 2014

Solve all these problems neatly and explain each step.

1. Using the indicial notation (and without using any vector identity) show that

Where !

is the permutation symbol. Also show that This term will be zero for
nonpolar fluid.

2. The steady state velocity profile between two concentric, rotating cylinders is given as,

, where outer cylinder (dia.

R

) is rotaing with angular
velocity ( !) and inner cylinder (dia. R
1
) fixed.
(a) Derive the expression for the rate of viscous dissipation term in heat transfer
equation.
(b) Suppose the system is closed container and length of both the cylinders are same as
L. Assume that all sides of the container are adiabtic in nature, viscosity is not a
function of temperature and thermal diffusvity of the fluid is very large. What is the
growth rate of average temperature of the fluid.
(c) Calculate the power required to rotate the outer cylinder at angular velocity !.
Verify the growth rate of average temperature from the expression of power input.
(d) Choose numerical values for each variable and the calculate the power and growth
rate of average temperature. Enjoy the numerical problem.
