On August 3, 1892, Esther
Wilson drowned herself
in the creek on campus just
minutes after preparing
dinner for her family in the
Farm House. She may be
spotted lurking in the parlor
at their former home.
Sarah Fitchpatrick was the
wife of William Fitchpatrick
and matron of the rst family
to live in the Farm House
during the Civil War in 1861.
She frequently haunts the old
kitchen at the Farm House.
Raymond Hughes was the
rst Iowa-born president of
Iowa State. He was president
from 1927 to 1936 until he
retired due to failing health.
He is said to still loiter around
the Dairy Industry Building.
Edith Curtiss, daughter of
Dean Charles Curtiss and
Olive, notoriously snuck out
of the Farm House 2nd oor
window to meet up with
gentleman callers. She can be
spotted reliving her wild days
by throwing open the curtains
and escaping through her
bedroom window.
After Charles appointment
to Dean, he and his wife
Olive Curtiss were given
the Farm House as their
residence. Olive threw lavish
dinner parties entertaining
many visitors. The ghost of
this hostess is said to haunt
the dining room at the Farm
House.
Charles Curtiss was
Iowa States rst Dean
of Agriculture (1902). He
installed the rst campus
phone in his residence, the
Farm House. He may be seen
keeping a watchful eye on his
daughter Edith!
Joseph Fitchpatrick, a
Union soldier in the Civil War,
was one of the eight children
born to William and Sarah
Fitchpatrick who resided in
the Farm House. He is still
spotted in his Union uniform
around Farm House.
Christian Petersen was
the rst artist-in-residence at
any college in the country. He
sculpted many of the beloved
works of art on campus.
Since the moving of his art,
Reclining Nudes, his spirit
can be found wandering
around outside Morrill Hall.
Charlotte Petersen was the
wife of Christian Petersen
and mother to their daughter,
Mary. Charlotte inspired her
husband to include poetry
into many of his works of art
on campus. She is often seen
with him near his works of
art. Their love for one another
truly transcends death.
Tom L. Thompson was a
ember of the rst graduating
class (1872). He died of
pneumonia while serving
as winter caretaker of Old
Main. He is the rst person
to be buried in the Iowa State
Cemetery. He just cant seem
to move on from Beardshear
Hall, former site of Old Main.
Tama Jim Wilson was
the Director of the Agriculture
Experiment Station while he
worked at Iowa State in 1891.
His last visit alive to the Farm
House was in 1913. When he
appears, he likes to spend his
time in the library of the old
home.
Margaret Stanton taught
English at Iowa State and
was also the wife of Edgar
Stanton, a faculty member.
Upon her death in 1895, her
memorial service was held
in Morrill Hall. Her spirit may
still haunt Morrill when the
campanile bells, a memorial
to her, toll.
William Miller Beardshear
was president of Iowa State
from 1891 to 1902 when he
died because of complications
following a heart attack. He
frequently lurks in Morrill
Hall, which was built while
he was president.
