Math This week we worked on problem solving and took Topic 2 test.

Before every test, I will offer a small extra credit page. It is not re-
quired that students do it, however, as I tell them...it would be silly
not to considering you can always use the bonus points! We ended the
week by discussing properties of multiplication and using mental
math when multiplying
Reading Our story next week is about the completion of the Trans-
continental Railroad that linked the west and the east. The workers
faced many challenges along the way. We will practice the reading
skill of cause and effect.
Grammar Next week we will discuss main and helping verbs and
work on identifying them within sentences.
Writing This week we dove right into our Tall Tales and began writ-
ing our stories. We discussed hooking the reader, adding exaggera-
tions, and showing, not telling and how to incorporate those better
in our writing. Next week we will work on revising and editing.
Spelling- Our list focuses on contraction words. Students can prac-
tice online at www.spellingcity.com/triton5.
Social Studies We took our Geography last week, and I was very
pleased with the scores. You are able to view the online test by going
to www.mybigcampus.com. Students have logins and can walk you
through how to access their graded tests. Our new unit is on Early
Americans including Native Americans. We are going to be training
students how to take good notes. Students will then be able to use
these notes on the unit test.
Science-This week we read about tools that scientists use and how
they use them. Next week we will work on understanding how and
why controlled experiments work by performing several investiga-
tions including investigation how high a tennis ball bounces on differ-
ent surfaces.

Note From the Teacher:

In an attempt to make learning fun, the fifth grade team has tried to incorporate more
themed days in the school year. Next Friday will be one of those days. Believe it or not, September 19
is International Talk Like A Pirate Day. Yes, it does exist. :) The 5th grade teachers will be dressin
up in our finest pirate attire and we invite students to participate if they wish. We will be learning
pirate vocabulary and incorporating all things pirate throughout our day. We will even be learning
about real pirates past and present. Dont worry..no one will have to walk the plank. :)

In about a week we will launch our annual Tupperware sales. The fundraiser will run through Octo-
ber 10th. Students in 5th grade are strongly encouraged to sell as much as they can. The money we
raise helps with 5th grade supplies and helping offset student cost for Camp Amigo. Please refer to
the envelope coming home shortly for more details. The top seller in 5th grade for Tupperware sales
will receive a FREE, Tupperware water bottle. The top seller (per class) cumulatively for fundraiser
sales will earn a FREE trip to Camp Amigo!!!! What a deal! :) Thank you in advance for helping us
raise money!
