    The nephron is the basic functional unit of the kidney that filters blood to form urine. Each kidney contains around 1.2 million nephrons, each consisting of a glomerulus for blood filtration, Bowman's capsule that collects the filtrate, a renal tubule where reabsorption and secretion occurs, and a collecting duct that collects the urine and empties it into the pelvis.
