IDEA NUMBER 1 (FIRST CHOICE)

The problem :
Lack of rounding off strategy among year 3 pupils

Idea:
Rounding numbers is one of those skills that is often taught using "tricks" and "rules". But pupils
often forget how to round off after sometime. So, I plan to teach rounding for deep conceptual
understanding and propose an alternate approach. First of all, students need to understand why
we round numbers for the skill to make sense to them. I think Primary school children learn
rounding best when teachers can present them visually (colourful and attractive) and relating
rounding with appropriate stories. Powerpoint can be used to increase understanding why the
pupils must round up, for 5 and greater and down, for less than 5.

IDEA NUMBER 2 (SECOND CHOICE)
The problem :
Year 3 pupils cannot understand and identify equivalent fraction.
Idea:
Fractions is an area that the year three pupils in my class find hard to understand. One of the
problems with fractions is that they have different meanings depending on the context.
Common mistake made by pupils :
1. Comparing the numerator without looking at the denominator
2. Thinking that fractions with different numerator and denominator are not equivalent
So my idea is to use technology (powerpoint presentation) to teach equivalent fraction by
identifying equivalent fraction using fraction strips and diagrams. I think using strips or fraction
bars is a great way to learn fraction facts and can help my year 3 pupils to understand
equivalent fractions and can show visually that a half is the same as two-fourths or three-sixths.
