L-6 Breakdown diodes

Zener breakdown mechanism

When a diode is heavily doped and the
reverse bias is raised, at one point (V
Z
) the
electric field is so high that it is able to pull out
valence electrons in such large numbers that
the resulting current breaks down the
junction.
Diode junction is not damaged
Zener potential can be changed by changing
the doping concentration
Zener diode
Voltage regulator
V
Z
is constant on a wide range of reverse bias
currents
This is the property of voltage regulator or
constant voltage reference circuit
Voltage regulator working
Case 1: When input voltage Vin changes
The excess current is taken into the Zener
diode without changing the current through
the load.
Case 2: When load is changing
If load increases, the current through the
Zener decreases and if load decreases, Zener
diode draws current into it.
