Use BS 7671 17th Edition IEE wiring Regs Appendix 4 -

Current carrying capacity and voltage drop for cables and flexible cords.

Look up the correct cable type and size and the tables give a Volt drop value in mV/A/M
multiply this by the length of cable and the design current / phase

Example using Table 4D4B IEE Wiring Regulations:

SSF.1-LG-CP.5 (18.5KW) , SSF.2-LG-CP.5 (18.5kw)
Cable Size 3 core x 10mm2 FRC,
Design Current 30.2 Amperes
Length of run 35 meters
Voltage at origin 400 V line to line

From Tables 4D4B mV/A/M for 3 or 4 core 3 phase cable = 3.8mV

VD = mV/A/M x Design current x Length

VD = (3.8 x 30.2 x 35)/ 1000 = 4.0166 Volts

Voltage reading at equipment = 400 4.0166 = 395.9834 Volts

VD = 1%

*Maximum acceptable volt drop specified by the IEE Regulations is 2.5% of the system
voltage, i.e. 0.025 x 400 = 10volts for 3 phase working or 0.025 x 230 = 5.75 volts for
single phase working.
