Strategy # ___2____

Strategy Name
Word Study: Developing Content Vocabulary

Brief Description:

In order to expand students content vocabulary, new words are introduced and
reinforced throughout a lesson. Using a variety of strategies (i.e., graphic organizers,
games, etc.) students learn new vocabulary and improve their content literacy.
Definitions should be taught, integrated into the lesson, repeated, and connected to
additional readings. Teachers should also demonstrate how the words are
meaningful to the students.

How you plan to use this strategy in your Practicum, Internship, Student
Teaching, or in your own classroom:

I would like to start each lesson by introducing new terms and establishing their
meanings. Therefore, when these terms are introduced throughout the lesson in
context, they will already have been exposed to them. During the lesson, I would
reinforce the vocabulary using graphic organizers. I like the Alike But Different
graphic organizer used in Tools for Teaching Content Literacy.
