Recently your child has been assessed on the way they spell words and teaching is now being directed to address each individuals specific needs. Your child will be bringing home a collection of spelling words weekly that have been introduced in class. These words are specifically chosen to target a need e.g. short vowels, long vowels, diagraphs, blends etc. Each night of the week, your child is expected to do a different activity to ensure these spelling words and the principles they represent are mastered. These activities are currently being modelled and practiced in class so your child will be able to show you how to do them. SUNDAY: Your child will bring home a page of words. Write a word pyramid for each spelling word. Example: C Ca Cat MONDAY: Have some fun with word colors. Write each word 5 times, using a different color each time. Identify and underline all the vowels. TUESDAY: Cut alphabets out of a newspaper or magazine for a word assembly activity. Arrange the alphabets to make the spelling words. Glue all the words into your home learning book. WEDNESDAY: Do a writing sort. As you call out the words in a random order, your child should write them in their Home Learning book into the same categories studied this week. Call out any words your child misspells a second or third time. SUNDAY MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY Word Pyramid Word Colors Word Assembly Writing Sort
The suggested activities above would be a good starting point for children to get into the habit of practicing their spelling words. After a few weeks, if you feel your child is ready to try a different or more challenging spelling activity, please feel free to choose from the list of other suggested activities. Please use the home learning notebook for all the spelling activities. On Thursdays I will randomly call out the words sent home and children will be asked to write these words. With a successful home/school partnership we should be spelling whizzes in no time! Have fun learning and guiding your childs spelling and make spelling homework as fun as possible! Thank You, Ms Lea
Other spelling activities to choose from 1. Write each spelling word using one color for the consonants and one color for the vowels. Example: school 2. Write one sentence for each word and circle the spelling word. 3. Write the words in ABC order. Example: fool, school, spoon, tool, wool 4. Assist your child in doing a word hunt, looking for words in a book they have already read that have the same sound, pattern, or both as the word sort we are studying. Try to find two or three for each category. 5. Write the words in reverse ABC order. Example: wool, tool, spoon, school 6. Write your spelling words. Add a rhyming word (not from your spelling list) next to each one. Example: School (Cool) 7. Create a comic strip using as many spelling words as you can. Use your imagination! 8. Write a creative story that uses 10 spelling words. (Spelling homework prompts students to practice their words and can get family members involved!) 9. Scramble each spelling word. Have a family member unscramble the words and sign your paper. 10. Have a family member say the word. Write each word forwards and backwards without looking at the paper. Example: School loohcs 11. Type your spelling words 10 times, using a different font each time. 12. Find each word in the dictionary. Copy a definition for each one.
Variety is the spice of life -- and spelling homework! Have fun with spelling!
