Dear Parents,

As you probably remember from last years report cards, our grading system goes as follows:
Students get a grade of: E, M, P, B, on their report cards.
Below is a breakdown of what those letters mean.
*********************************************
Exceeds the Standard is not equal to a traditional A. The mark Exceeds the standard will be very
rare and should be reserved for exceptional and consistent attainment of the standards. The
expectation is that most students will end the year with a grade of M-- Meets the Standard
E
Exceeds the standard The student demonstrates thorough, in-depth understanding
of basic and extended concepts and skills. Performance is
characterized by self-motivation and the ability to apply the
skills with consistent accuracy, independence and a high
level of quality.
M
Meets the standard The student demonstrates thorough understanding of basic
concepts and skills. Performance is characterized by the
ability to apply the skills with accuracy, quality, and
independence.
P
Progressing toward the
standard
The student demonstrates understanding of basic concepts
and skills. Performance is characterized by the consistently
applying of skills with increasing success. Performance varies
in consistency with regard to accuracy and quality. Support
and guidance often needed for clarification to sustain
involvement.
B
Beginning to develop the
standard
The student demonstrates minimal understanding of basic
concepts and skills. Performance is inconsistent even with
support and guidance.

As I correct and return your childs papers to you, I will try to use these letter grades along with some
percentage grades. This way you will be better able to assess how they are preforming according to the
Massachusetts state standards as well as the common core standards.
Cordially Yours,
Mrs. Turner
