Assignment 1

Do not consider the effect of stress concentrations. Neglect transverse shear, if not mentioned
clearly.

Q1. A C-frame subjected to a force of 15 kN is shown in Fig. It is made of grey cast iron FG 300 and the
factor of safety is 2.5. Determine the dimensions of the cross-section of the frame. Ans: 16 mm

Q2.A round steel rod is subjected to axial tension of 50 MPa with superimposed torsion of 100 MPa.
What is your best prediction of the safety factor with respect to yielding if the material has tensile yield
strength of 500 MPa. Ans: 2.77

Q3. The mechanism of a bench shearing machine is illustrated in Fig. It is used to shear mild steel bars up
to 6.25 mm diameter. The ultimate shear strength of the material is 350 MPa. The link, lever and pins at
B, C and Dare made of steel FeE 250 (
yt
S = 250 MPa) and the factor of safety is 5. The pins at B, C and
D are identical and their length to diameter ratio is 1.25. The permissible bearing pressure at the pins is 10
MPa. The link has circular cross-section. The cross-section of the lever is rectangular and the ratio of
width to thickness is 2:1. Calculate (i) Diameter of pins at B. C and D (assuming pin is tight, consider
only direct shear and crushing or bearing do not consider bending and transverse shear loads); (ii)
Diameter of the link (iii) Dimensions of the cross-section of the lever. Take 0.5
ys yt
S S = . Neglect
transverse shears.
Hint: This problem is a solved problem in Bhandari book you may refer if you need it.
