To remove the Generic Electronic Module (GEM):
1. Disconnect the battery and remove covers from the instrument panel.
2. Disconnect wiring connectors from the fuse panel and GEM.
3. Remove mounting bolts and screws to detach the GEM.
To install the GEM, reverse the removal steps and reconnect all wiring connectors. Check for proper operation after installing the GEM.

Removal 1. Disconnect the battery ground cable (14301).
2. Remove the cover from the instrument panel fuse junction panel.

4. Postion the hood latch release handle aside. 1. Remove the screws. 2. Position the hood latch release aside.
5. Position the parking brake release handle aside. 1. Remove the screws. 2. Position the parking brake release handle aside. 210/8/2008
6. Remove the lower instrument panel steering column cover (044F08). 1. Remove the six lower instrument panel steering column cover bolts. 2. Remove the lower instrument panel steering column cover.
7. Remove the two (A) bulkhead electrical connectors from the (B) instrument panel fuse junction panel. 310/8/2008
8. Remove the two (A) instrument panel fuse junction panel bolts and remove the two (B) interior fuse junction panel nuts.
9. Disconnect the three (A) GEM/CTM electrical connectors from the (B) GEM/CTM. 410/8/2008
10. Remove the three GEM/CTM screws and the GEM/CTM.
Installation NOTE: When the battery (10655) is disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 16 km (10 mi) or more to relearn the strategy. 1. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Check for proper operation. 510/8/2008

4. Install the lower instrument panel steering column cover. Position the lower instrument panel steering column cover. Install the six bolts.
5. Install the parking brake release handle. 1. Position the parking brake release handle. 2. Install the screws. 710/8/2008
6. Install the hood latch release handle. 1. Position the hood latch release handle. 2. Install the screws.
7. NOTE: On vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions, move the shift lever to the 1 position to ease installation. Carefully press the (A) clips and install the (B) steering column opening cover. 810/8/2008
