A2 MEDIA 2009-10 OUTLIN E

As with the AS, the A2 is evenly split between two units, an exam unit (G325) and a coursework unit (G324),
each worth 50% of the A2. As before a significant proportion of the coursework marks is based on evidence of
planning and evaluation. I’ll outline the basics of these units below, but it is crucial you recognise that the A2
is designed to build on the AS work; we will extensively use the terms, case studies and concepts (everything
from semiotics to the economic and structural reasons for the dominance of stereotypical S.Eng
representations in British film to Propp’s narrative theory) from the AS.
In A2 we reverse the order of the units: we work on coursework through to the January exams, then work on
the exam unit for June.

G324: ADVANCED PORTFOLIO IN MEDIA

Having canvassed opinion in July, there was a strong preference to do further film-based work. You can
choose one of the following two options for this:
2. A promotion package for a new film, to include a teaser trailer, together with two of the
following three options:
1a website homepage for the film;
2a film magazine front cover, featuring the film;
3a poster for the film.
10. A short film in its entirety, lasting approximately five minutes, which may be live action
or animated or a combination of both, together with two of the following three options:
1a poster for the film;
2a radio trailer for the film;
3a film magazine review page featuring the film.

G325: CRITICAL PERSPECTIVES IN MEDIA
Two exam questions; section 1 is split into two questions (you answer both) based on your coursework
productions, while section 2 offers a range of topics – you will answer ONE of the two questions given on the
topic MEDIA AND COLLECTIVE IDENTITY. We will explore the representation of ‘Britishness’ for this,
across film, TV (possibly radio) and the press (you must refer to at least 2 media in the exam).
1a asks you to analyse your productions with reference to 1b ‘requires candidates to select one
one or two specific production practices, from: production and evaluate it in relation to a
media concept.’ ONE from:
 Digital Technology
 Genre
 Creativity
 Narrative
 Research and planning
 Representation
 Post-production
 Audience
 Using conventions from real media texts
 Media language
