Social Studies 8 Course Outline 2014-2015- Nelson

Welcome to Social Studies 8!


The focus study for the Grade 8 Curriculum is the concept of Worldview.
Students will study three different case studies and link how different social, political, and
geographical factors can shape a peoples worldview. The goal of social studies is to provide
learning opportunities for students to:
Understand the role, rights, and responsibilities of a citizen in a demographic society and
in the global community.
Participate constructively in making rational decisions.
Respect the dignity and worth of ones self and others.
Validate and accept differences that contribute to the pluralistic nature of Canada.

Grade Eight: Historical Worldviews Examined
Topic
A. Origins of a Western Worldview: Renaissance Europe

Students will demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of how the exchange of
ideas and knowledge contributed to shaping the worldview of the Western world.

Timeline: September December

B. From Isolation to Adaptation: Japan

Students will demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of the ways in which
beliefs, values and knowledge shape worldviews and contribute to a societys isolation or
adaptation.

Timeline: January - April

C. Worldviews in Conflict: The Spanish and the Aztecs

Students will demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of how intercultural contact
affects the worldviews of societies.

Timeline: April - June
Local and Current Events
In order to allow opportunities for students to engage in current affairs, issues and
concerns of a local nature, the program of studies provides the flexibility to include these
topics within the time allotted for social studies.

Materials:
Textbook
Student course notes booklet (provided)
Pencil, pen and eraser
All other materials required for class will be announced to the students prior to that class.

Attendance:
Just because you werent in class doesnt mean that it didnt take place! Students are responsible
for making up any assignments, tests and or quizzes they miss due to an absence. Choose a
reliable friend to catch you up after your absence. If you are planning on being away for an
extended period of time please let me know so I am able to prepare a package for you to work on
during your absence.
