U.N. Under-Secretary-General, Ambassador Abdelazizs presentation will focus on partnerships
in the implementation of the African transformative agenda, following up on the emphasis of the
three-day U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit on August 4-6, which advanced the Administrations theme
of trade and investment in Africa, and highlighted Americas commitment to Africas peace and
security, democratic development, and good governance.
Before being appointed Special Adviser on Africa to the U.N. Secretary-General on May 1,
2012, Ambassador Abdelaziz served as the Permanent Representative of Egypt to the U.N. from
2005. He brought to his new position more than 33 years of experience in multilateral diplomacy,
promoting global development and socio-economic agendas from an African perspective.
Ambassador Abdelaziz represented Africa in both the Economic and Social Council and the
General Assembly as their Vice-President, and played a leading role as the African member of the
bureau of the U.N. Conference on Sustainable Development, also known as Rio+20.
As Special Adviser on Africa, Ambassador Abdelaziz has been playing an active role in
enhancing the U.N.s role in Africas development, with particular emphasis on the achievement of
the internationally-agreed development goals, including the Millennium Development Goals, as well
as the preparatory process for shaping the post-2015 development agenda of the U.N.
