Motorcycles, scooters and mopeds comprise 50-70 per cent of the motor vehicle fleet in Indian cities.

In
a city like Hyderabad approximately 70-80 per cent of families own a motor vehicle. This means that
motorized two-wheeler ownership has become possible for the main wage earner of lower middle class
households and college students belonging to middle class families. A family earning about Rs. 15000-
20000 per month can own a motorized two-wheeler. This is a new development in urban living leading
to high pollution and congestion. With such high levels of vehicle ownership it will be very difficult to
attract people to public transport unless the latter is made very convenient, cost effective, and offers a
level of service comparable to personalized modes of transport in terms of not just comfort but also in
relation to point to point access. Very important point is we have limited land use, keep in mind all the
problems and constraints.
