Area of Rectangles
Grade Level: 3
Objectives
Students will be able to determine the area of rectangles
Students will be able to describe the process of finding the area of
covering or tiling a two-dimensional surface
Students will be able to compare the areas of rectangles by cutting
and configuring them into similar dimensions
Resources
Smartboard (or another interactive device at the front of the classroom)
Rectangle comparison sheet
2 congruent construction paper rectangles
Different color markers
Example as well as a short quiz
Procedure
Explanation
o
Using examples on Smartboard, explain inverse operations
o
List the order of operations and explain their meaning
Demonstration
o
Pull up a map using Google maps and demonstrate inverse
operations by describing how one would give inverse directions
Group Practice
o
Break students into groups of 3 or 4 and provide several example
problems for them to work through
o
After five or ten minutes have groups combine with one or two
other groups and discuss any confusions
Individualized Practice
o
Put several example equations on the Smartboard and allow
students to work through them
o
Walk through the room and assist students that have questions
Assessment
Immediate (Non-graded) Assessment
o
Provide each student with a dry erase board and marker
o
One at a time, put equations on the Smartboard and have students
solve them
o
Students will hold up their boards for evaluation after each problem
Graded Assessment
Mathematics Lesson Plan
1
Adopted from: http://www.agrademath.com/lessonplans/SolvingOneStepEquations.html
o
Give each student a short quiz following the dry erase boards
Indiana State Standards
Mathematics Standards Fulfilled:
o
8.3 (Students solve simple linear equations)
o
A1.2 (Students solve one variable equations)
