Commissioning

Commissioning: to authorise the production of something.

The commissioning process in the first in the six main stages of the production process of
creating a media product:
Commissioning
Pre-production
Production
Post production
Distribution
Exhibition

Step 1:
The commissioning process in terms of making a video would begin when the producer(s), is
approached by a client who has identified a need for the product to be made. From this a
discussion would be conducted between the two parties deciding on key factors such as
budget (all funding for the video would be provided by the artist or label) and time frame.
Step 2:
The producer would then conduct some background research into the audience and the
genre of the artist to better understand how to meet their needs and wants and create a
successful music video.
Step 3:
The producers would then start to draft up an initial idea to pitch to the artist/label of how
this would be appropriate for them and how it would fit their aims or ethe of the
artist/label.
Step 4:
If both parties are happy with the idea then the video would be commissioned. From this
stage it would become critical to find an appropriate crew to fulfil the needs of the client,
with the need to find an experienced director in this field being at upmost importance as,
due to there being little money in this area there are not many prestigious directors with
much experience in this field.
