About Kannawa Hot Springs
It is said that Ippen Shonin, founder of the Jishu sect of Buddhism, opened a
health spa in this inferno-like area, sometime in the Kamakura Period. Beppu
boasts the second highest volume of hot springs water in the world, and
within Beppu, Kannawa is known for its large number of source springs. The
view of the steam rising from the many Kannawa hot springs was selected
second, behind Mount Fuji, among the top hundred scenes of Japan the
Japanese people most want to preserve into the 21
st
