Cade and Ponyboy Curtis smoking
in an abandoned church. On
August,18 1960, two boys named
Johnny and Ponyboy were smoking
and one of their cigarettes dropped.
The burning cigarette, made the
churchcatchonfire.

At the church, Johnny and

Ponyboy saw a group of children
having a picnic. Johnny and
Ponyboy hear an adult cry that one
of the children are missing.
Ponyboy hears someone
screaming in the church. Johnny
climbs through a window, in the
burningchurch.

Johnny and Ponyboy see the

group of children in the back of the
church. They go by the children
and toss them out the
window.One of Johnnys and
Ponyboys friend, Dallas Dally
Winston, appears at the scene,
and yells the roof is going to fall.
Once Johnny and Ponyboy got the
last child out, Johnny pushes
Ponyboy out of the church, the
rooffalls.Whentherooffell

Ponyboy heard Johnny scream.

Ponyboy tried to go back in to
save Johnny but, Dally pulls him
back.

Ponyboy woke up in an
ambulance, with the childrens
chaperone named, Jerry Wood.
Wood told him, that his back
caught on fire and the jacket he
was wearing caught on fire. Also
Wood, told him that his friend,
Dally, got burned. Wood said in a
low voice, Your other friend,
Johnny,isinprettybadshape.
