Leather sector in Andhra Pradesh

The Leather Industries Development Corporation of A.P. Ltd., Lidcap Hyderabad was set up
on 4-10-1973 under IndianCompanies Act, with the following objectives.
To promote and develop Leather Industry in the State;
To generate gainful employment to Leather Artisans particularly to women and those
below the poverty line through capacity building, upgrading their skills and
technology to make them consistently self reliant.

LEATHER SECTOR IN ANDHRA PRADESH:
A.P. PROVIDES 10% OF Indias raw material;
Exports of Leather and leather articles is below 1% of Indias exports;
Could tan only 5% of the raw materials due to lack of tanning facilities;
Balance 95% is transported to other states where value addition is undertaken at the
cost of A.P.
A.P. has rich resources of raw-hides and skins and to generate value addition and
employment, the Government of A.P. has appointed LIDCAP as Nodal Agency vide G.O.Ms.
No. 573, Dt. 26-11-2001. LIDCAP has conceived a Plan of Action to set up (94) Leather
Industrial Parks (72 Mini, 16 Medium and 6 Mega Parks in a phased manner commencing
from 2001 to 2007 with infrastructure facilities of 1) Construction of Production-cum-Training
Centre, 2) Raw Hides/Skins Collection Centre, 3) Construction of Houses for Cobblers, 4)
Primary School and health Centre etc. The LIDCAP has entered M.O.U. with C.L.R.I., Chennai
for technical guidance and the APIIC Ltd. for construction works. As on 31-03-2008, the
Corporation has set up 18 Mini Leather Indl. Parks, 1 Medium Park. During the year 2008-09 it
is proposed to set up 4 Mini Parks and 1 Medium park.

Each Mini Leather Indl. Park is established in (25) acres of Government land with a cost of Rs.
25.00 lakhs each. And accordingly, parks have been established, where there are large No. of
S.C. B population in and around the park area

As on 31.3.2008, LIDCAP has established 18 Mini Leather Parks throughout the state of A.P.
with a total cost of Rs. 2.81 crores and machinery worth of Rs.77.70 lakhs is provided to 10
mini leather parks. In addition to the above footwear training machinery worth of Rs.10.74
lakhs also provided to the districts.
