What does hearing

impairment mean?
Defined by the IDEA as,
an impairment in
hearing whether
permanent or
fluctuating, that
adversely affects a
childs educational
performance.
Characteristics
of Hearing
Impairments
Child does not respond
consistently to sounds or to
his or name.
o Not startled by loud
sounds.
Child asks for things to be
repeated or often say
huh?
Child is delayed in
developing speech or has
unclear speech.
Child turns the volume up
on TV or other electronic
devices.
1. Reduce auditory and
visual distractions.
2. Specialize seating
arrangements.
3. Clearly enunciate speech.
4. Allow extra time for
processing information.
5. Repeat or restate phrases
and check for
understanding.
6. Support consistent and
daily usage of listening
equipment.
7. Encourage self-advocacy.
