September has come and gone!

We all enjoyed
applesauce on September 26
th
in celebration of the
legendary Johnny Appleseed.
September was a successful month with the children
having learned our school and classroom routines. hey
have been able to ma!e new friends and are beginning
to accept and meet the demands of the grade two and
three curriculum.
RELIGION
he "amily #ife and $eligion programs have allowed
us to e%plore our uni&ueness and the &ualities
surrounding our names and friendship. he 'r. 2(s will
shortly be painting their special )shirts. he 'r. *(s
have all signed their class !ites and e%pressed a yearly
goal on their own personal !ite.
LANGUAGE ARTS
he children should now be able to trac! all their
reading in their respective reading folders. +t is
e%pected that each student complete at least one level
each month and in turn submit their folder to school
every two wee!s as indicated on the calendar so that
progress may be recorded. he students are very good
about reading independently in class during silent
reading time. We have also been wor!ing on reading
with e%pression and intonation in our voices while
reading aloud. hroughout the year we will build
comprehension by ma!ing inferences and connections.
,oth grades started the year writing a summer
recount and two different formats of lists according
to their respective grade e%pectations. he grade two
students are gradually moving towards procedural
writing and the grade threes are wor!ing on paragraph
writing. We are also put an emphasis on proper synta%
and grammar within their sentences.
heir word wall words are recorded in their agenda
every -onday. +t is a good idea to have them practice
the spelling of these words on a regular basis. .$uff
/raft01 our writing mascot1 has made it home with
several of our friends and we are thoroughly enjoying
hearing about the adventures he has been ta!en on.
We are also enjoying the creative stories our grade
three writers are publishing through the use of the
(Writer(s ,riefcase(.

MATHEMATICS
As an e%tension to last year(s school focus1 we are
continually e%periencing math through in&uiry based
learning. he children wor! continually on the concepts
and strategies associated with numeration. hey are
learning to represent their thin!ing in an organi2ed
manner. 'r. 2 students are busy completing activities
based on both number concepts. "ollowing numeration
they will be wor!ing on patterns and data management.
he 'r. * students are beginning to understand the place
value of numbers and being able to represent numbers
using a base ten model in different ways. +t is important
that all students practise their number facts using
various strategies to help them. $emember to chec! the

SCIENCE
+n Science1 grade 2 students are wor!ing on
e%pectations associated with wor! and forces. he grade
three students are wor!ing on concepts associated with
Strong and Stable Structures. ,oth are enjoying the
e%perimental approach and hands on activities. +t is
important to review what they have learned in science
when their noteboo! is sent home.
COMMUNICATION
Welcome to all our parent and community volunteers
who will be assisting in a variety of ways with the
students. 3lease don4t ignore the fact that as parents you
are one of the most important educational partners
wor!ing with me to ensure your child is happy and
successful at school.
