Importance of content validity

Content validity is the extent to which the elements within a measurement procedure are
relevant and representative of the construct that they will be used to measure (Haynes et al.,
1995).
Content validity is also important for teachers as a guideline in making an assessment or test
items. from there, teachers can choose on how to implement the assessment methods,
whether it will be direct or indirect testing.
The importance of content validity is to make sure that the items that need to be tested is
relevant in the assessment. For example, if the objective of an assessment is listening and
speaking, then an oral test is suitable to be implemented in order to validate its content. A
speaking test which appears in paper-and pencil multiple-choice test cannot be claimed as
containing content-related evidence, hence there is no content validity in it.
In order to create an assessment with greater and accurate results, one of the important
aspect that needs to be taken into emphasis is content validity. A tester will need to identify
the contents to be tested, in order to wholly create the full assessment.
