questions.

1. Which method of organization (subject-by-subject or point-by-point) is used? Does it work?
Why or why not? Is the method of organization consistently employed? What is the order of
ideas in each body paragraph?

2. Does the essay compare, contrast, or do both? Are any details irrelevant or too obvious?
Suggest one comparison or contrast that isnt included but should be noted.


3. How does the introduction engage the reader? What background information is provided?


4. What is the essays thesis statement?



5. Does the thesis statement highlight each of the subtopics of the body paragraphs? What are the
subtopics of the body paragraphs?




6. Does each body paragraph begin with a clear topic sentence? What are the topic sentences?
Are they supported with details and concrete, specific examples? What are they?




7. Does the conclusion summarize the essays points? How is the thesis statement reworded?
How does the conclusion provide closure?




8. Identify errors in grammar and mechanics. Check commas, apostrophes, appropriate language,
using exact words, avoiding wordiness, homophones, who/whom, capitalization, sentence
variety, fragments, run-ons, pronoun & antecedent agreement, pronoun reference & case, shifts,
ending in prepositions, and active/passive verbs.

9. Does the essay meet the target length of 2-3 pages? Is each paragraph at least 7 sentences in
length? Is the heading, header, and general formatting correct (title, spacing, margins)?
