Adeena Serving to her friends

An-Nur children are learning practical life skills by doing Montessori practical
life activities. The children are improving their hand-eye co-ordination and fine
motor skills through all the activities they do e.g. pouring, spooning, using tongs
and even the sharp knife. We call these Work. Adeena loves to do work. Very
often she would initiate setting the table for morning tea and lunch, and after
every meal she would volunteer to clean up the table, sweep the floor, or push the
chairs back under the table. This morning when everyone sat for morning tea she
served them. She got the plate of fruit which she prepared before and put in the
middle of each table. Two plates of fruit for two tables. Usually the children serve
themselves to learn to be independent. Today when I asked Adeena to serve the
crackers to her friends she was very happy to do that. She took the bowl of
crackers and went around the table and gave everyone two crackers. The An-Nur
children learning table manners too. So when she finished serving one of her
friend she stood for a moment to hear her friend say, Thank you Adeena.
Adeena would reply, You are welcome. We are also teaching our children to say
Jazak Allah khair which is also means thank you in Arabic language. Our
children are very good learners. Such a good bunch of children we have! We are
so proud of them.

We believe that learning practical life
skills was one of the best ways for
young children to practice and develop
their fine and gross motor skills,
develop confidence in their abilities,
develop independence and learn to get
along with others.
In Te Whariki National Early
Childhood curriculum it states in
Exploration, goal 2.Children will
experience an environment in which
they gain confidence and control of
their bodies.
