I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the Grade 10 students will be able to:
a. Realize that the call for a change is urgent
b. See themselves as an agent of change
c. Explain a quotation based on their experience
d. Fill in a semantic map about world problems
e. Perform a tableau showing the suggested solutions to the problems on the essay
f. Create a poster promoting environmental care.
g. Write an inspirational poem
h. Construct a hypothetical sentence
i. Make an essay telling the things that they have done for societal change

Selection: the Girl who Silenced the World for Five Minutes by Michael Foster

Copy of the Text
Semantic Map for World Problems
III. Procedures
A. Pre-Reading Phase

I. Activation of Schema

The teacher will use text previews. An excerpt from the story will be shown
to the class. They will be asked to tell something about it.

My father always says Youre what you do, not what you say. Well, what
you do makes me cry at night.
Try to understand the quotation above. What do you think is the speaker
talking about?

II. Developing of Concepts

The unfamiliar words will be used in sentences. The students will then guess
the meaning through context clues. After getting the correct meaning, a
student will be called to use the word in a sentence.

1. She called on grownups to follow the same rules we teach our
children. (elders)
2. She believes humanity will act to change our future. (people)
3. We hear about animals and plants going extinct every day vanishing
forever. ( dying)
4. It makes a tremendous difference when you were born than today,
(large)
5. I challenge you, please make your actions reflect your words.(match/
show)

III. Developing a Purpose
Motivation-Motive Questions will be asked.
Motivation Question : If the world would listen to you within 5
minutes, what would you tell its people?
Motive Question: What did the girl tell the world?
A semantic map will be used where the students will be asked to
write the problems of the world that they know.

The essay will be read aloud by the students. The class will be divided into four
groups. Each group will read their assigned parts aloud.


C. Post Reading Phase
I. Engagement Activity 1 ( Discussion)

a. Who is the speaker of the story?
- Severn Suzuki
b. What pushed her to make the speech?
- The problems that are destroying the earth.
- The people who seem to not care about the future generation.
c. What are the problems did she mention?
- Environmental problems
- Peoples attitude
d. What part of the essay interested you the most? Why?
e. If you were the audience, what would you feel?
f. What solutions can you suggest to solve the mentioned problems?

II. Engagement Activities 2 (Group Activity)

The class will be divided into four groups.

Group 1. Perform a tableau showing the suggested solutions to the problems
mentioned on the essay.
Group 2. Create a poster promoting environmental care.
Group 3. Write a poem encouraging others to make a difference for societal
change.
Group 4. Since to believe is to see, perform a short skit showing a
broadcaster reporting that the problems of the world are already solved.

III. Enrichment Activities (Individual)

The students will be asked to write the things theyve already done for
the following problems.

1. The starving children around the world whose cries go unheard
2. Holes in the ozone.
3. Afraid to let go of wealth

(Hypothetical Sentences)

Stage 1. Warm Up

If you were rich what would you do?
(A student will be asked for their answers.)

The beggar on the essay answered this question.

If I were rich , I would give all the street children food, clothes, medicine,
shelter and love and affection.

Stage 2. Discussion

What have you noticed on the sentence?
The thought is not yet existing but there is a possibility for it to happen. This
is an example of hypothetical sentence. The format of this sentence is (If
clause + past form of the linking verb + would).
Stage 3. Guided Practice
