Hatchet THEME
Brian Robeson stared out the window of the small plane at the endless
green northern wilderness. Would you survive months in the wilderness
with only a hatchet? Brian did. The main theme in Hatchet is about courage,
bravery, independence and that you have to make things happen and not wait
for things to come to you. One example of where this theme occurs is when
Brian makes fire by himself, another example is when Brian crafts a bow and
arrows out of simple thin sticks, another act of courage is when Brian decides
to go get the survival kit inside the plane with the dead pilot.

The first place where the theme occurs is when Brian creates fire with
simply his hatchet and some rocks. The sparks grew with his gentle breath.
The red glow moved from the sparks themselves into the bark, moved and
grew and became worms, glowing red worms that crawled up the bark hairs
and caught other threads of bark and grew until there was a pocket of red as
big as a quarter, a glowing red coal of heat. I put that quote because its the

part where Brian makes fire. Another reason why I added the quote is
because it is a very important moment for Brian.

The second place where the theme occurs is when Brian is when he
makes his own bow and arrow out of nothing. A bow and arrow. A thin,
long arrow with the point in the water and the bow pulled back so that all he
had to do was release the arrow. yes. This quote is the moment when Brian
gets the idea to make a bow and arrow. This relates to the theme courage
because he had get the courage to go kill animals for food because he there
wasnt a supermarket right next-door.

The third place where the theme occurs is when Brian gets the guts to
produce a raft to get the survival kit in the plane where the dead pilot is. It
was the survival bag. He pulled and tore at it to loosen it and just as it broke
free and his heart leaped to feel it rise he looked up, above the bag. I chose
this quote because its an important part of Hatchet where Brian gets the
survival kit with the emergency transmitter. This quote has to do with the

theme courage because he has to have the courage to go by himself get the
survival kit and no one was going to get the kit for him.
