Cody Chew

Period 6
Dates: September 17 to 18
Guiding Question
What is the relationship between density and polymer structure?
Beginning Question
What will happen to a gummy bear when you put it in water overnight?
Hypothesis
If I put the gummy bears in the water overnight, they will get bigger and become more dense
because it will absorb the water.
Safety
No Horse Play
Do not eat the gummies because they are contaminated with chemicals
Tests/Procedures

Materials
Gummy Bear
Gummy Worm
Cup
Water
Measuring Device for length and mass

Procedures
Day 1
1. measure the length, width, and height
2. measure the mass
3. find density by mass/volume
4. put in cup to leave in water over night
Day 2
1. remove gummies from water
2. measure length, width, and height
3. measure mass
4. find density by mass/volume
Claim
If I leave a gummy bear in water, it will absorb the water and become more massive.
Evidence

Reading and Reflection
Gelatin is a virtually colorless and tasteless water-soluble protein prepared from collagen and
used in food preparation as the basis of jellies

when you add water to gelatin, the water molecules get in between the gelatin molecules and
cause the gelatin substance to absorb the water.
The result of adding water to the gelatin is unknown because the density for the gummy worm
decreased while the gummy bear increased.
