Resistance To Pilling

Pilling is important effect that we have to test because pilling effect is most common
effect for most garments. Simply we can say that pilling is a result of rubbing, which can have a fiber balls
effect on the appearance of garment .They are more often to rubbing with another surface. Due to rubbing,
the tips of several fibers are pulled out creating a fuzzy surface. Later, broken fibers grip to felt tips and
forms separate, gradually growing pills. There are many factors affect to the pilling effect on the fabric.
They are Type of fiber or blends, fiber dimensions, yarn and fabric construction, and fabric finishing
treatments.
Here we test pilling effect of knitted fabric using pilling box. We test four samples using pilling box.
During testing, a piece of fabric is sewn in place firmly round a rubber tube. It is rotated in the pilling box
Pilling box rotate 3hours.in each hour box rotate 3600 rotation. After tumbling, the extent of pilling is
assessed visually by comparison with arbitrary standard.
Advantages
Numbers of rotations are automatically counted.
Better rubbing motion is applied.
Machine is not expensive
Disadvantages
waste more time for sample preparation
Sample do not touch continuously box surface in all times.
The assessing method is subjective when comparing with visual standards.
.
Precautions

There may be pleats because of attaching tapes in two side. To avoid that attach tape well
When samples are placed over rubber tube, inner seam should be symmetric & touched rubber
tube surface. It made even surface
Box should be cleaned before place samples in the box
