Political
developments in SA are
followed with great
interest, partly because
both countries contributed
to SAs struggle for
liberation and democracy
WHAT IT MEANS FOR US
Coverage of our domestic
issues in these countries
affects the way in which
SA is perceived. It has
implications for the way in
which news and other
events are covered in the
rest of Africa
The character/
personality of South
Africans is attributed to
the general openness of
South Africans to an
appealing culture and
high-level accomplish-
ments. We are equally
perceived to be imposing
and aggressive, especially in
the business and corporate
sector. Ongoing tensions
between South Africans and
other African citizens do,
however, hurt the
reputation of SA
WHAT IT MEANS FOR US
Perhaps it is time to
reconsider what ubuntu
means to us in SA. Should
we not nd a different way
of interacting with the
citizens of our continent
not with arrogance, not with
deference, but as equals, as
citizens of a continent in
which we equally have a
stake?
The South African
creative industries:
There are very positive
associations (music, TV
and lm-production
capability). The level of
SA business sophistication
(in sectors like nance,
retail, ICT and telecoms,
infrastructure and general
management) is well
respected
WHAT IT MEANS FOR US
Again this implies that we
should be conscious of
how we portray and
conduct ourselves in our
business on the continent.
We must take
responsibility for doing
things differently
South African
economic interests in
Kenya and Nigeria: They
have very positive
perceptions about SA
business entities and
economic relations in
Kenya. SA products and
services are viewed
positively, and food is
considered to be
competitively priced and of
high quality
WHAT IT MEANS FOR US
SA companies, however,
express concerns about
the Kenyan market due to
some unsuccessful
ventures by some
companies
