GASTROENTIRITIS
WHAT IS IT??????
- is a condition that causes irritation
and inflammation of the stomach and
intestines (the gastrointestinal tract).It
is also a diarrheal disease of rapid
onset, with or without accompanying
symptoms, signs, such as nausea,
vomiting, fever, or abdominal pain
Causes:Viruses and bacteria are
most common.
Viruses ((Norovirus, Rotavirus,
Adenoviruses, Parvoviruses, and
Astroviruses)
Bacteria (Clostridium difficile,
Salmonella, Shigella, and
Campylobacter, E coli)
Parasites and Protozoans (Giardia,
Cryptosporidium)
Exposure to poisons or other
irritants
Diet change, food preparation
habits, and storage
SYMPTOMS:
Fever above 37.7 C
Nausea & vomiting
Mild to moderate diarrhea
Crampy painful abdominal
floating
Serious symptoms:
The infection can spread from person to
person because of improper handwashing
following a bowel movement or handling a
soiled diaper.
Prevention:
Always wash your hands.
Eat properly prepared and
stored food.
Bleach soiled laundry.
Treatment:
Oral rehydration
therapy
Intake clear fluid.
Blood in vomit or
stool
Vomiting more
than 48 hours
Fever higher than
101 F (40 C)
Swollen abdomen
or abdominal pain
Dehydration
