Field Experiences

Class Summary
EDFN 338: Foundations of American
Education
I observed in a 1
st
grade room at Journey Elementary
School. I spent most of my day watching Mrs. Ling teach
and lead different activities throughout the day. Toward
the afternoon I was able to do a little more than just walk
around asking children questions; Mrs. Ling had me give
one of the students her spelling test and I was able to
help students with their math practice on the computer. I
observed different classroom management ideas, and
different teaching techniques and routines. I took different
aspects away that I can apply in my own classroom.
ELED 440: K-8 Language Arts
Methods
I worked with 2 other students from my class and we team
taught in a 3
rd
grade classroom at Madison Elementary.
Each week we worked with students on developing
different stages within the writing process. Students
worked on developing a superhero story that would be
published in the class book we would put together. On
our last day with them, we read their book and the
students were excited to put it in the class library.
ELED 450: K-8 Reading Methods During reading methods, I worked with a small group of
kindergarten students from St. Thomas Elementary School
in Madison, SD on different reading strategies. I
implemented the use of technology using an iPad with
one of my lessons. I brought in different activities for the
different types of learners. I worked with them on learning
their sight words and other vocabulary. On the last day,
the other college student teachers and I created centers
for the students to rotate through after reading a book to
the class. They were able to apply what they had learned
throughout the time we spent with them.
ELED 459: Intro to Literacy Assessment
and Remediation
For this class I was in a 4
th
grade classroom at Madison,
Elementary School. I helped the students with different
ways to comprehend information in non-fiction books.
Each week, we read their Weekly Reader Magazines and I
introduced them to different techniques such as
highlighting and breaking stories up to understand what
was important. The students in my group were great
readers, but struggled with answering questions at the
end of the story. When they answered the last questions, I
could tell my students had made improvements.
